It was a practice in atiquity that towns and cities were built on hills and elevated areas so that it would be easy to defend against advancing enemies.

Logically, roads leading to the city gates were winding.. imagine yo pan derecho so kennon road... which was good for travellers and their animals bringing cargo.

But on occasions of a king's visit, out of respect and love and excitement, they wanted to expedite his coming by building a more direct route which would mean levelling mountains and filling up valleys.

And the people hearing Baruch and Isaiah talking of these myt be thinking of such old practice. John the Baptist echoing them could get the same treatment from the peopele of his time.

But for Xtians in Advent time, it means something totally different. For John refers not to roads but to hearts. John speaks not only of Christ's coming but also of our going back home to God in repentance.
