Cultural Background na Ibanghilyo (nanlapud sakey ya commentary) pian mas namutektek tayo so Salita'y Dios:
The Greek word often translated as "deaf" (telek)may sometimes mean "mute"(emel). The association of both meanings with one Greek word is understandable because the two skills are related. Speaking involves the ability to imitate what one hears.
In the story, Mark intends the meaning "deaf" since he adds another very specific Greek word that means "unable to speak properly."(ata-ata) That this man could speak at all suggests he may not have been congenitally deaf,or that his hearing loss was not total.
no makanengneng tayoy toon bulag o telek o toon walay physical disabilities, say onaan ya nalikna tayo parad sikara et nakasian tayo ra. agi, kaskasi met ira ag da nanengeng so rakep na mundo; agi, ag da narengel so masamit ya sonata. bangbalet, siopa kasi so pakaskasi: sikaran walay kakulangan o sikatayon lempyo so laman?! say kuanto may bulag ya akatongtong ko aminsan, maung lay bulag kuno nen say nanengeng ton manlalaban so karapa ton too. maung ni kasi met so telek nen say narengel tayo so ayew na kapara tayo? kelangan tayo met amo so man patambal ed Hesus ta anggaman makanengneng tan makadgel tayo bulag tan telek balet iray kapusoan tayo. saya so mas mairap ya kipapasen. nausar tayo komun ya makabaliksan so saray inter na Dios ed sikatayo. fr. dudz
"he has done everything well!"
this is how the people assessed Jesus and his ministry. Here we find the Gospel challenging us to give ourselves fully to the ministry.
one of the "fundaments of the recently concluded ALD clergy retreat was the call to "die to self." when we give our whole-hearted dedication to our assignments we hope to be also told in the end "he has done everything well."
Say sankairapan ya tambalen et say manbubulag-bulagan. Mantetelektelekan. Maneme-emelan. Tan lapud anggan antoy gawaen sarayan kipapasen et pinili tan mabolos ya dinisisyonan.
Akin kasi et say too no maminsan et ikopit toy mata to ya singa anggapoy naneng-neng to; ikapot toy layag to pian anggapoy narengel to; ag onesel pian anggpoy naibaga to? Laut la ed kapegleyan na kaugsan!
Lapud takot? Baing? Anggapoy pibabali?
Si Jesus so makapanyari! Manmatalek tayo ed sikato. “Agaylay abig na amin a gagawaen to! Iitdan toy pakadngel iray telek, tan pakasalita iray emel!”
nen unaan ko ni ya manbibinyag, ipipilak may rite of ephatha nu iner kkrusan ko may layag tan lips to may ugaw with the formula: "The Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. May he soon touch your ears to receive his word, and your mouth to proclaim his faith, to the praise and glory of God the Father. Amen." simply put, say ephatha addressed ed ckatayon amin reminding us of our responsibility in listening and proclaiming God's word. kerewen tayo met ed Hesus ya kumo natambal so inkatelek tayo (say pansara tayoy puso tayod salita to) tan say inka-emel tayo (say hindrances nu akin et natatakot tayon i-proklama tan ibilay so pananisya tayo).
trivia: antoy unaan ya imbaga to may too nen atambal ed inkatelek tan inka-emel to?
"Yuck!" kuanto.
ta inkolikol ni nen Hesus may lima to ed layag to tan nilutdaan to. katon nen indiwit nen Hesus may tamoro to ed dila to may too, katatae layag tan walay lutda ni. Ewww! hehehe
the healing story of Mark sets tone for the next part of Jesus' ministry, that is, his ministry to the nonbelievers in a gentile territory. The story describes the conditions of the nobelievers who don't recognized Jesus because they have not listened to him (deaf) and and could speak about Jesus (mute) because they don't know him.
Recognition (through voice vs deaf)and knowledge (through speach vs mute) about Jesus are prerequisites to be a proclaimer of Jesus. So Jesus is not only calling his fellow Jews and his disciples to become his proclaimers but even the nonbelievers can become his proclaimers.
The story heals and eventually commissions the gentiles and nonbelievers as witnesses to Jesus.
When a former nonbelievers speaks, do people listen to him? When a former sinner speaks aboout God, do people accepts his credibility?
"God comes and does do not be afraid. He is a God who rewards and a God who comes to save as" (Is. 35:5)
Let us not let the opportunity pass when a gentile speaks and listens?

from a commentary:
Jesus deals with the blind man "sacramentally" as it were, actually putting his finger into the man's ears and using spittle to touch his tongue. In our highly antiseptic culture, communication by spittle is regarded as offensive. In Jesus' day it was highly esteemed as instrument of healing. In any case, there is a physical communication, via spittle, from the tongue of Jesus to the bound tongue of the man.

pari: duga ka, ag ka makarengel dya...
some people specialize in "selective hearing" i.e. hearing only what they want to hear. likewise there are who specialize in "selective speaking" i.e. saying only what they want to say.
let us all pray for the gift of openness and honesty.

Ephphata - Be opened!
These are words directed not only to the ears but to the man himself... thus being called by Christ to follow his way and learn a new way of hearing, a new way of speaking, a new way of seeing.
The same challenge to 'ephphata' is being directed by Christ especially to the so called SARADO KATOLIKO among us to finally open up and realize that Christianity or discipleship is not just about worship and novenas and processions. Its about a new way of seeing, a new way of hearing and speaking as shown by Jesus himself who opened up from his own Jewishnesss and started to practice a new religion of Catholicism by going to the gentiles. Its about showing no partiality (2nd rdg) or if ever it must be a partiality to the poor whom God chose to be rich in faith. Say sarado katoliko nepeg lukas so nunot, mata, layag tan sangi to ya mankimey tan mangibando na hustisya tan katuwaan tan panangaro ed sayan panaon.
